TAPESCRIPT

JOHN: I’m John Doe. I’m a journalist with an important magazine. The other day I saw a white-hired man sitting on the porch in front of the house. I could see the wrinkles on his face and neck and his wrinkled hands.  Articles on the secrets of living to an advanced age are always popular  with our readers, so I decided to pursue this story and discover the secret of this man’s long life. And one day I approached him and said:

JOHN: Sir, would it bother you if I talked with you for just a moment?

MAN: Not at all. On the contrary, it would delight me. I get very bored sitting here. Until a little while ago I lived a full and active life without a moment’s rest.

JOHN: Well, they say that a lot of activity helps one to live a long time.

MAN: That’s true. I still feel very well, although my step slowed down a little.

JOHN: I suppose you didn’t smoke or drink, or…

MAN: On the contrary! I’ve always smoked my head off. And until a little while ago I went dancing every night. And as for alcoholic drinks…

JOHN: I’ve always been told that doing those things is bad for the health.

MAN: Ridiculous!

JOHN: I suppose that you have another secret…a lot of fruit…vegetables…a lot of exercises in the fresh air…

MAN: Don’t be silly! I hate exercises in the fresh air, and I don’t like any kind of vegetables.

JOHN: This is incredible!

MAN: What do you mean, incredible? What are you talking about?

JOHN: It’s just that I can’t understand how you’ve been able to live like that and to have lasted so long. Tell me how old are you?

(The place to stop and answer the question to the pupils.)

 MAN: Me? I’m twenty-seven. Why?

T: To see the right answer of this question and decide which of you is closer to the real answer ( the age of the man) I propose to listen to the end of the dialogue.

( tape script)

IV. Post-reading activity.

T: What kind of life did the man spend all his life?

P6: He smoked his head off.

P7: He went dancing every night.

P8: He used much alcoholic drinks.

T: Is there any idea about spending the life healthier?

P9: More exercises in the fresh air.

P10: A lot of vegetables, fruit.

P11: Avoid smoking, alcoholic drinks, dancing all night long.

V. Announcing the topic and aims of the lesson.

T: The topic of today’s lesson is spending healthy life and at the end of the lesson you should be able to let us know about your own secret of a long life.

VI. Reading and Discussion.

T: I’d like you to read the extract from the article “The Teenagers’ World”, called “Are Smoking And Drinking Problems With Teenagers? (HO 2)

( «Іноземні мови» № 1, 2002 ст. 53)

T: Are teenagers in Ukraine different from their British peers?

P…

T: From my point of view, the most common problem is people start smoking

and using alcohol at early age now.

 - Does our school face the problem of young smokers?

P…

T: What are your feelings about smoking?

(Exchanging the ideas.)

P…: I’m quite sure…

P…: I’m convinced that..

P…:I can share your point of view and add that…

VII. Matching

T: Our next step is to choose the ending of the sentences. Having the sentences completed we will know more facts about the world of cigarettes, drugs and alcohol. (HO 3)

 The beginning:                                                 The ending:

1. Cigarette smoking may have cause…         a) 100,000deaths.

2.  A 22-year old girl was sent to a prison…     b) for 9 months for presenting                                                                          her friend with the Ecstasy                                                                          tablet.

3. Tobacco kills…                                          c) more Americans each                                                                                year than alcohol, illegal                                                                              drugs, murderers and AIDS

  VIII. Group Work.

T: For the following task you should be divided into two groups. Each group will get the card with the ideas to express. Discuss them in your groups and represent the way of spending long and healthy life. (HO 4)

                 Group 1

 It’s cool to do…

 It’s popular among young people…

 It’s useful for our health…

   Group 2

Young people not have to do…

 It’s cool to do…

 It’s not popular to…

It’s harmful for our health to…

 IX. Summary.

T: We have to stop now. Our lesson has come to the end. And in conclusion I must say that it’s up to the individual to decide what way of life to choose. It’s your own personal decision. But before starting to smoke, use drugs or drink alcohol you are to think of all fors and againsts. In any case you have to answer the question,” What for?”

-  Thank you for the atmosphere of cordiality and understanding.

X. Homework.

                                                                                                 HO 2

 Task VI.

Read the extract from the article “The Teenagers’ World” and answer    the question:

  • Are teenagers in Ukraine different from their British peers?

Are Smoking And Drinking Problems With Teenagers?

( From the article “The Teenagers’ World”)

Parents who worry about their children smoking or taking drugs don’t need to worry so much- 70 per cent of British teenagers neither smoke nor want to try it. Most teenagers are against drugs.

Most teenagers do drink alcohol- about 80 per cent- but most of them only drink occasionally at family parties or weddings.
